Drawing How To

Eventually this might be a cool place to put some actual art tutorials (for however much I'm able to do so, or am an authority to do so biggrin smiley). For now though I'm just importing some old stuff from my allusion.net pages.

Hehe, I always wanted to do one of those.. winking smiley

Well, cutting the funnies -- ^_^\ -- Here are some of my more recent pictures that were done entirely with the computer. All of these were done under Linux using The Gimp 1.0.2 and a Wacom ArtIIZ tablet. In the earlier pictures I was having some problems with the fact that there are.. pixels.. to get in the way of smooth lines and fills =). I eventually have worked through that though, and the latest result is the picture "Terra" at the bottom, which I am planning to submit to The Gimp's monthly contest in January '99. Click on a thumbnail below to view the bigger version of the picture. And remember, boys and girls, don't use/change/copy these pictures without permission =). Without more of that ado stuff..

This is an unnamed picture that I did a while back right after I first started playing with the computer artwork. This followed directly on the colorization I did of a scanned drawing (visible at the bottom of my front page). The picture was done using a geometric sketch, then a rough outline, and finally an ink and paint (cel method). The colors were done using the airbrush tool. Copyright 1998 Dan Potter.

This is only the second picture I've done on the computer, also totally from scratch, and I'm actually pretty pleased with the results this time. This picture was started many months ago. A lot of work on it was done at one point, then I kind of stopped for a while, not knowing what I should fill in for the background. Finally, I got a little inspiration and more Gimp knowledge, so I filled in a scene from the story which Terra comes from (currently known as Rainy Day). This picture is of her floating above a shallow ocean, drawing up the water with magic. Copyright 1998-99 Dan Potter.
